Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
